New Subaru BRZ maintains rear-wheel drive, is 250 kg lighter than the WRX and anticipates the best Toyota in the world

Japanese sports coupe has 2.4 engine that produces 228 hp and was developed in partnership with Toyota.

The Japanese understand fun — and we’re not talking about the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch or the like. Subaru released this Wednesday (18) the new generation of the BRZ sports coupe , which weighs around 1,275 kg, has a low center of gravity, is front-engined and has rear-wheel drive. As a comparison, the Subaru WRX weighs around 1530 kg.

The launch is powered by a 2.4 boxer aspirated engine that guarantees 228 hp of power and 25.4 kgfm of torque (which already appear at low revs). And, of course, offered in a version with a six-speed manual transmission – there is also an automatic transmission option.

The new BRZ has a Sport mode, which keeps the vehicle in lower gears during curves and offers faster downshifts. Tire specifications remain the same, 215/45 R17 for the Premium configuration and 215/40 R18 for the Limited.

With a renewed and more aggressive look, mainly due to the air intakes that take the front, the model is 2.5 cm lower than its predecessor and has aluminum on the fenders, roof and hood — which did not prevent a 50% increase in chassis structural rigidity. All this to compensate for the increased weight of the new engine. The model will arrive in the second half of 2021 in Japan and the United States and anticipates what can be expected from the new Toyota GT86 (which will probably be called GR86).

Toyota participated in the conception and development process of the new Subaru BRZ , sharing almost all the characteristics that will be present in its own sports model (including the platform and the use of the 2.4 boxer engine). The expectation is that the sports “twin” of the BRZ will be officially presented in the coming weeks.
